Family Time in Aurora

Every time I am asked to photograph Cindy and Bob and their family, I enjoy it even more. From their wedding to their first son Baylor to his brother Jack to just any chance our paths cross, it is always a treat to be around them. And when Bob’s daughters Shannon (one of my favorite students from a past career) and Tara (who shares my love for photography) and Cindy’s parents are thrown in the mix, the photo shoot gets even better! So following is just a random sample of photos we captured on Christmas Eve. Starting with Jack’s “formal” shot and ending with Baylor and his friend from next door, each shot was a joy. Hope you enjoy them as well!

One of the highlights of my fall photo shoots was the opportunity to watch brothers and sisters (and brothers and brothers and sisters and sisters) interact with each other. As one of five children (bless you, Mom!), I don’t think I appreciated how special that relationship is. I just knew that home baked cookies disappeared far too quickly and one bathroom for seven people is a logistical challenge. Raising two daughters who became best friends, even choosing the same college to attend, was the best gift a mother could want. Watching the siblings photographed below as they posed and played and hugged and laughed just made me smile. And keeps me smiling. I hope the photos make you feel the same.

Parent and Child

In the next week I am going to make up for lost time and blog about so many of the wonderful photo shoots I have done in the past several months while I was taking a blogging break. I have lots of excuses for not blogging regularly (a trip to Europe, finishing our cabin in the mountains, playing apps on my iPhone), but mostly I just needed some time to think about life. And death. And how much I cherish having the chance to photograph so many families and friends and life altering events.

And so, instead of blogging about individual photo shoots, I’ve put together a series of themes (my yearbook background just keeps asserting itself!) and pulled samples from my shoots of the past few months. The first one was going to be called “Mother and Child” because I cannot stop thinking about my beautiful daughter Janet and her husband Andrew whose baby was stillborn this past August. They are truly my heroes as they continue to heal over these past few months. But every time I capture a mom or a dad (which is why the title had to be expanded to include them as well!) in unguarded moments with their children, I can’t help but think of Janet and Andrew. I know they will someday be that mother and father; in the meantime, I would like to share just a few of my favorite candid shots.

These last two are extremely special to me. The first is of Karlyn and Nolan, my first grandson. The second is of Janet and Miller, my second grandson.

Kosta, Joanne & Sean

Kosta is Joanne and Sean’s miracle baby, as he was born three months prematurely weighing only two pounds, eight ounces. As you can see by the photos that follow, he is thriving! And watching Joanne and Sean with Konstantinos Ioannis (yes, it’s all Greek to me!) was the best part of the photo shoot. He was so happy and adorable the entire time that it was tempting to put down the camera and just hold him. And the other highlight was seeing Joanne again and meeting her wonderful husband. All in all, a great day!

Matthew, Lauren and Kate at Silo Park

I love photographing families. And Debbie and Brian have done such a great job with their three children, big brother Matthew and twins Lauren and Kate, that spending time with them is even more delightful. When I first shot them in the fall, the girls were a little shy; this time, we all explored the wetlands, the playground, the toolshed, and every inch of one of my new favorite locations, Silo Park. I think we captured every mood of this wonderful family; following is just a small sample. Enjoy!

Angelina Turns One!

I loved photographing Angelina and her parents, Marie and Nick, last winter, but had even more fun this time around as Angelina just turned one. She is such an adorable little girl, as you can tell by the photos that follow, and Marie and Nick were great about trying out different settings at a park in Stapleton. And Marie was nice enough to let me photograph Angelina a few days later in her grandmother’s coat, as each year Angelina can be documented growing into this special heirloom. I loved all the moods Angelina showed in this shoot, as you can see. Enjoy!

Nicholas Turns Two

When Nicholas was born two years ago, I had the privilege of shooting his newborn photos. And this last photo shoot marks my fourth time capturing Nicholas and his parents, Melissa and Chip. I swear this beautiful baby has grown into one of the cutest two year olds I have ever seen. (Take a look at his parents, and it is easy to understand why.) But even better is how he warmed up during our photo session, allowing me to capture him in so many different moods: shy, sad, exuberant, cuddly, and thoughtful, to name just a few. For those of you who know my tradition of photographing birthdays with a special object, you’ll find it in Chip’s baseball glove. Thanks, Melissa and Chip, for allowing me to spend time with you and your “little man.” Following is just a small sample of photos from last Saturday’s shoot.

Kenzy Turns Three!

I love photographing Kenzy! She is not only flat out adorable, but she is so darn sweet. Every single thing we asked her to do, she did—with a smile. Her parents, Tim and Maggie, clearly know how to raise a delightful daughter. Take a look at this small sample of the photos I just shot for Kenzy’s third birthday milestone and you’ll understand why I love what I do. Thanks, Kenzy, for being such a perfect model!

I always ask my parents to choose an item of importance for their child to hold/wear/toss for birthday shoots. Not only did Kenzy have a special doll, but they had matching pj’s as well!

AND my new favorite park has a great wall to help keep an informal “growth chart” from year to year!

Happy Anniversary, Rick and Pat!

When John first contacted me about photographing his extended family outside of Idaho Springs, I had no idea that they were celebrating his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary (Rick and Pat look far too young to be married 40 years!) and that people would be coming in from all over the western United States. And they had no idea that it would SNOW every minute of their late April weekend. No problem! I had such a great time meeting and photographing everyone. (And I even left room in the parent/sibling photo to Photoshop in the one brother who could not make it to Colorado!) I loved their enthusiasm about trekking outside for a quick photo on the bridge. But the best part was taking photos of the 12 grandchildren outside; they were so cooperative and photogenic. Following is just a sample of the photos we captured. I am so glad I was invited to be a small part of this incredibly important weekend.

I love this photo because it was unplanned. Oh, to be looked at that way after 40 years! (And yes, those are snowflakes in the photos!)

Baby JR and Family in Stapleton

When I shot a maternity session for Cindy and Bob (and Baylor!) in January, I kept thinking how glad I was we had the chance to capture Cindy’s pregnancy before John Robert made his appearance. And, sure enough, he decided to arrive almost two weeks early, as he was born on February 3. And what a beautiful baby he is, and watching his big brother Baylor hug and kiss him is even better. Congratulations, Cindy and Bob, and thanks for letting me share this experience with you!

JR’s grandmother quilted this especially for him. It is stunning!

I love the way JR is looking up at his mother in this shot.

Cindy’s parents, Carolyn and Rudy, also came along for the shoot, and Carolyn asked me to take one photo showing both her and JR’s hands. I love the way he reached out for her in his sleep. And we had to play with the picture frame just for fun!
